At 0204 hrs early Friday morning April 20th, Engine 312 along with other west side units were alerted for Fire-Rescue Box 56-3 for the reported Apartment Fire with People Trapped. The address was initially given as 12020 Reisterstown Road at Futurecare Cherrywood Nursing Home. However, 911 was recieving multiple calls and it was believed to be behind that location. Truck 404 cleared a nearby call and was first on the scene on of a three story apartment complex at 3 Caraway Road with fire through the roof – requesting the second alarm. Engine 312 responded on the initial box with 4 and Engine 311 responded on the 2nd alarm with 5 – a total of 9 volunteers. Initial crews attempted to make an interior attack but were forced to evacuate due to the heavy fire conditions and had to make an exterior attack. Upon arrival Engine 312 took a position on side Charlie and sent its crew to side Alpha to assist crews in searching exposures for possible victims and check for extension. Engine 311 arrived shortly thereafter and covered the hydrant that Engine 312 had layed out from. Engine 311′s crew utilized 312 to place the Bliztfire and 2 1/2″ line in service on side Charlie to knock down fire also using the deck gun. Truck 404 and Truck 18 setup on the Alpha side and flowed master streams to knock down the fire along with other handlines. Once the fire was darkened down enough, crews went back into the fire building to hit hot spots and put the fire under control. No civilian victims were ever found to be trapped. Crews from both Baltimore and Carroll Counties worked well together and held the bulk of the fire to the original fire building. Units went in service after approx. 4 hours of work.

Mr Bill Howard has been a volunteer firefighter at our station for 70 years now. We are proud and in awe of how many years he has put into this company and our community. He was recently acknowledged for his 70th year at our Annual Meeting this year.

An excellent interview and writeup was done by Alexander Pyles of patch.com and can be found here. This story has now made it into the national media by being highlighted on Huffington Post.

Thanks to Patch and Huffington Post for celebrating with us the wonderful dedication and achievements of one of America’s bravest.
