The Officers and members of the Owings Mills Volunteer Fire Company are pleased to announce that one of our own has been hired by a local jurisdictions Police Department. Sergeant Brandon Shepperd will be starting the academy on Monday, which could last anywhere from 6 to 9 months. It was a long process to finally achieve your dream but it was well worth it. We are going to miss seeing you around the firehouse although we wish you the best of luck in your new career!
On Wednesday evening minutes before 7 o’clock, Engine 311 along with other west side units were alerted for a reported Apartment Fire in Liberty Roads area off of Southall Road. Engine 311 responded on the run with 4 volunteers as the 3rd due engine and while en route dispatch gave responding units updated remarks that this was going to be a confirmed working fire. Engine and Truck 18 arrived minutes later with smoke showing. Engine 311 arrived second and assisted Company 18 units with extinguishment, ventilation, and overhaul of a kitchen fire. The Volunteers stayed busy responding to 13 other calls for service on this day.
Volunteers continue to stay busy, this time with an automobile fire on Midpines Court.
On Monday morning as crews were participating in a “Mock Rescue” at Owings Mills High School, they were dispatched for a 10-50 PI with Rescue at Owings Mills Blvd and South Dolfield Road. Crews arrived to find 2 vehicles involved but the patients weren’t trapped. The rescue assignment was quickly scaled back. 2 patients were transported to the hospital and Company 31 units were ready for service just after 0830.
It was three years ago, on September 27th 2008 that Maryland State Police Trooper 2 fatally crashed. The crew aboard Trooper 2 consisted of Flight Paramedic Mickey Lippy, Pilot Steve Bunker, EMT Tanya Mallard, Ashley Younger, and Jordan Wells. The only survivor of this horrible crash was Jordan Wells. This accident was the deadliest crash in the 47 year history of the Maryland State Police Aviation unit.
The accident particularly hit close to home for the members of Owings Mills because Mickey volunteered here since 1994 and he previously held the positions of Fire and EMS Lieutenant. He was a loving father, husband, son, uncle, and friend. On this day three years later, the officers and members of the Owings Mills Volunteer Fire Company have not forgotten our true brother Mickey, nor have we forgotten the rest of the Trooper 2 crew.
