Three members from Owings Mills were able to expand their rescue knowledge this weekend at a “Big Rig Rescue” class sponsored by the Baltimore County Volunteer Fireman’s Association and taught by Instructor Billy Leach Jr. All participants attended a three hour classroom session Friday October 21st and a hands-on all day session Saturday October 21st. Volunteers from Truck and Squad companies all over Baltimore County were placed in crews made up of members of surrounding companies and given five different “Big Rig” scenarios. Scenarios included an overturned cement truck and tanker trailer, tractor and school bus over-ride, and a trailer under-ride. Participants in the course learned how to better stabilize these “Big Rig’s” to be able to care for and extricate patients in a real life situation. Thanks to the organizing committee, the BCVFA, Billy Leach Jr., and the multiple tow companies who assisted with the training.

On Monday morning as crews were participating in a “Mock Rescue” at Owings Mills High School, they were dispatched for a 10-50 PI with Rescue at Owings Mills Blvd and South Dolfield Road. Crews arrived to find 2 vehicles involved but the patients weren’t trapped. The rescue assignment was quickly scaled back. 2 patients were transported to the hospital and Company 31 units were ready for service just after 0830.

Early in the morning Friday October 7th at 0129 hrs, Engine 312 and Truck 313 along with other West side units were alerted for the Apartment Fire at 15 Phlox Circle. Initial comments reported “heavy black smoke” and additional information was given by dispatch en route of a possible fire in the bathroom. Engine 312 arrived with light smoke showing – establishing the command and stretching an 1 3/4″ line to a 3rd floor apartment with moderate smoke conditions. Truck 313 arrived on the alpha side assuming first due truck responsibilities. Crews found a small fire in the bathroom with minor extension. 312 knocked the fire down as 313 checked for extension, ventilated and completed quick searches of the apartment. Additional units assisted with these tasks, but the incident was quickly scaled back to Engine 312, Engine 56, and Truck 313. Units were in service within approx. 40 minutes.

We wish to thank everyone who came out to the Open House / Safety Day on Sunday.  It was a cool and rainy which did not dampen the spirits of the people that did come out.  Again, thank you for your support of the Owings Mills Volunteer Fire Company.
